The streaming giant has made several changes to its lineup since January, with cancellations affecting shows across different genres and markets.
Netflix leadership has previously said that a series’ performance plays a major role in renewal decisions. In a 2023 interview with Bloomberg, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the company had “never canceled a successful show”, explaining that productions need to attract audiences in relation to their budgets.
Among the shows cancelled this year is The Abandons, a big-budget Western starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. The series was cancelled in January, with creator Kurt Sutter later criticising Netflix’s decision before retracting his comments.
The Vince Staples Show was also cancelled after two seasons despite receiving strong reviews from critics and viewers. The animated series Terminator Zero was cancelled in February, with creator Mattson Tomlin confirming that its critical and audience reception was strong but that not enough people watched it.
Netflix also confirmed that Alice in Borderland had ended following its third season, while the Spanish thriller Billionaires’ Bunker was cancelled after its first season.
Other shows that will not return include the Indian series Class, live dating show Pop the Balloon and Tyler Perry’s Miss Governor.
Meanwhile, The Night Agent is set to conclude with its fourth season rather than face an abrupt cancellation. Creator Shawn Ryan said the upcoming season would provide a proper conclusion to Peter Sutherland’s story.
In June, Netflix cancelled The Boroughs less than a month after its debut, while Ransom Canyon was cancelled in September, less than two months after its second season premiered.
The latest cancellation is Sweet Magnolias, which ended after five seasons. The series, starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley, followed three lifelong friends navigating relationships, family and careers in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina.
Swisher thanked the show’s cast, crew and viewers following the cancellation, while also confirming that she will continue working with Netflix on its upcoming series Ladies of the House.
